Many people have heard of the NDIS, but often don’t have an understanding of what it is and the supports and services it can provide. The NDIS or National Disability Insurance Scheme is a government funded program to assist people living in Australia with permanent and significant disability.
The NDIS provides supports and services to people under 65 with a permanent disability to help manage the impact the disability has on their lives whilst giving them access and greater opportunity to participate within the community.
Who is Eligible?
The NDIS eligibility criteria include:
- Aged between 7 and 65.
- Australian Citizen, permanent resident or protected special category visa holder.
- Live in Australia.
- Your disability must be caused by a permanent impairment.
- Need disability specific supports to complete daily life activities.
How does the funding work?
The NDIS pays for a range of reasonable and necessary supports for these individual. These supports and services fall into 3 main categories
- Core
- Capital
- Capacity Building
Core funding is used for supports and services that are aimed at participants completing activities of their daily life.
Capital Funding is used for supports that are going to support an investment such as assistive technologies, equipment and or home/vehicle modifications.
Capacity Building funding is used for supports that such as therapies that will help a participant improve their functional capacity and improve their independence.
These supports/ services are broken down into a further 15 categories
- Assistance with Daily Life (Core)
- Transport (Core)
- Consumables (Core)
- Assistance with Social & Community Participation (Core)
- Assistive Technology (Capital)
- Home Modifications (Capital)
- Coordination of Supports (Capacity Building)
- Improved Living Arrangements (Capacity Building)
- Increased Social and Community Participation (Capacity Building)
- Finding and Keeping a Job (Capacity Building)
- Improved Relationships (Capacity Building)
- Improved Health and Wellbeing (Capacity Building)
- Improved Learning (Capacity Building)
- Improved Life Choices (Capacity Building)
- Improved Daily Living (Capacity Building)
Each NDIS plan is specific to an individual and their goals. The funding will be distributed among these categories with the overall goal of supporting the participant to have greater opportunity to access the community and improve/maintain their levels of independence.
